The Center of Urban and Regional Planning for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad witnessed the discussion of the master’s thesis entitled (Mixed land use and its impact on the urban structure “Study area, 9th of April neighborhood, Al-Ghadeer Municipality”, by the student Sara Khairy Hayawi, and supervised by Professor Dr. Hussein Ahmed Al-Shadeedi.
The thesis aimed to reach the most influential indicators through which the impact of mixed land use on the urban structure of the study area in the 9th of April neighborhood in Al-Ghadeer is measured, as the reality of the situation was studied as a suitable model for measuring the researched indicators and analyzing the land uses in it and conducting field surveys and obtaining information and preparing a questionnaire form for the population.
The student concluded that there is a clear impact of mixed use on the components of the urban structure through the researched indicators, and that the change in the type and function of land uses within the study area devoid of prior planning was a reason for the disruption of the structural system and the noticeable decrease in the individual’s share of residential use, in addition to the high population density that constituted a burden on the infrastructure of the region.
The thesis recommended the necessity of taking into consideration any change in the type or function of land use, provided that it is preceded by the planning stage, in addition to periodic analytical operations to determine the size or type of change in the system of relationships linked between the elements of land use, especially the transformation of residential use into commercial use, taking into account the isolation of large commercial complexes from housing and the removal of crafts or workshops that cause noise for individuals in the residential area after involving citizens in the planning process.
