The Dean of the Center of Urban and Regional Planning for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad, Professor Dr. Kareem Hassan Alwan, participated in the scientific workshop entitled (Green Building in Iraq: Solutions and Problems), which was held by the Department of Electronic and Communications Engineering at the College of Engineering at Al-Nahrain University. The workshop aimed to increase awareness about sustainable practices and technologies in the industry. Construction, architecture and green building adoption.
In his intervention, Alwan discussed the types of environmental, economic and social sustainability, and the role played by housing departments to educate, empower and encourage citizens to move towards green construction (green architecture), taking into account social and cultural identity as it is the main part of housing concepts and that the Iraqis are among the oldest builders of the world and owners of the most ancient civilization, and thus there must be planning ideas for providing the appropriate environment for housing after adopting policies to enable community behavior and its social dimensions of coexistence.
The challenges facing green construction projects and how to overcome them were also discussed, as well as a review of the opportunities available for housing and land uses. It is noteworthy that the workshop was attended by the Dean of the College of Engineering at Al-Nahrain University, Professor Dr. Jumaa Salman Jiyad, representatives of the Ministry of Housing, the Municipality of Baghdad, and other guests.
