Center of Urban Planning Discusses a Master’s Thesis on the Aesthetics of Urban Landscape
The Center of Urban and Regional Planning for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad discussed a master’s thesis entitled “Metaphor in the Aesthetics of Urban Landscape” by the student Abbas Mohammed Ridha, and under the supervision of Professor Dr. Firas Thamer Hamoudi.
The thesis aimed to provide a knowledge base for the concept of metaphor, and to extract materials that represent the characteristics of the natural environment and the traditional city, to contribute to achieving the aesthetic view of the urban scene, and thus the positive feelings of the viewer.
The thesis examined the problem of the weakness and disintegration of the urban image in the contemporary city as a result of the lack of materials that constitute a place, and thus the disappearance of the possibility of feeling beauty, especially in its urban space.
The study concluded that the traditional city (Al-Kadhimiya City – study area) includes aesthetic, visual and functional characteristics and relationships, while the modern locality lacks most of these characteristics, especially with regard to the visual aspect. The student recommended the need to include in the urban environment concepts that enhance the characteristics of urban cohesion and the application of these materials in the new locality.
