The Center of Urban and Regional Planning for Graduate Studies at the University of Baghdad discussed the master’s thesis entitled (urban expansions and urban growth scenarios) by the researcher Ahmed Ihsan Taha, and the supervision of Professor Dr. Jamal Baqir Mutlaq. The use of appropriate methods to anticipate the number of the future population leads to more accurate results, which reflects positively on calculating the required urban expansion areas and reaching more accurate estimates of the population in the study area.
The researcher concluded that there is an urgent need for an additional expansion of (174) hectares to fill the housing need and services according to estimates of population and housing need at the stage of population distribution (forecasting) because it is higher than the estimates of the master plan. The research also recommended government agencies to the importance of using forecasting methods in population estimates such as The Cohart method, as it gives population estimates according to age groups and sex, and works on statistics that include fertility rate, sex ratio at birth, and average life expectancy according to age groups and population numbers.
