The Rehabilitation and Employment Unit at the Center of Urban and Regional Planning, University of Baghdad—in collaboration with the Continuing Education Unit—organized a training workshop for postgraduate students titled “Using Artificial Intelligence Techniques in the GIS Laboratory.” The workshop was conducted by Dr. Suad Jaber, an Assistant Professor at the Center.
The workshop aimed to highlight the significance of artificial intelligence (AI) in advancing scientific research and education, while introducing key modern AI tools and techniques designed to accelerate academic processes and data analysis. It also featured discussions regarding the challenges and ethical considerations associated with the use of such technologies.
During the session, Dr. Jaber covered core concepts in computer vision and AI, including Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), U-Net models, and Segment Anything Models (SAM). Furthermore, the workshop explored the relationships between geographical variables—such as pollution levels and their impact on real estate—by aggregating data at the neighborhood, city, or provincial level. It demonstrated how AI techniques can be applied to analyze these factors, thereby influencing the outcomes of statistical analysis.
At the conclusion of the workshop, participants emphasized the necessity of keeping pace with these advanced technologies and integrating them into academic curricula and research projects. This, they noted, would foster innovation and enhance students’ skill sets for the future job market.
