Faculty Member Participates in a Doctoral Dissertation Discussion at the University of Technology
Dr. Sarah Mahmoud, an assistant professor at the Center of Urban and Regional Planning for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad, participated in the discussion of a doctoral dissertation at the College of Civil Engineering, University of Technology. The dissertation, titled “Using Geospatial Analysis to Apply Sustainable Development Goal Indicators: A Case Study of Karbala City,” was presented by student Duaa Taha.
Dr. Mahmoud emphasized that the dissertation presented a unified geospatial framework integrating remote sensing and field data collection, along with spatial analysis, to monitor sustainable development indicators. She noted that this framework offers a transferable methodology applicable to other regions and can be expanded upon in future research to support comprehensive sustainability assessment and planning. She further explained that the student presented a novel approach to monitoring selected sustainable development indicators in Karbala Governorate, Iraq, focusing on sustainable food production systems within Goal 2, land use efficiency within Goal 11, and Goal 4, which relates to quality education, as key sustainability concepts.
It is worth mentioning that the center’s urban planning faculty members have diverse academic contributions at numerous universities, reflecting the center’s unique and specialized academic focus on urban planning and the application of sustainability concepts within it.
