Professor Karim Hassan Alwan, Dean of the Center of Urban and Regional Planning for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad, chaired the committee that discussed a master’s thesis in the Department of Urban Planning Engineering at the Technical Engineering College of Sulaimani Polytechnic University.

Dr. Alwan confirmed that the thesis, titled “GIS-Based Multi-Criteria Analysis in Evaluating the Industrial Spatial Distribution: Sulaimani Governorate as a Case Study,” discussed the spatial distribution of industries in Sulaimani Governorate using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCDA-FAHP) techniques. The aim was to assess the suitability of existing industrial sites and identify the most appropriate areas for sustainable industrial expansion.

He noted that the study revealed a clear industrial concentration within the center of Sulaimani, along with spatial gaps in the utilization of suitable areas.

It is worth mentioning that the student, Bahhar Hassan Mohammed, presented a spatial model in her thesis to support decision-making in future industrial planning. It is worth mentioning that the Urban and Regional Planning Center has various scientific contributions at the level of Iraqi universities, in terms of participation in conferences, seminars and scientific workshops, in addition to chairing and being a member of master’s and doctoral discussions, in implementation of the motto of the parent university (the university in service of the community).
