The Center of Urban and Regional Planning for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad held a workshop entitled “The Right to the City,” presented by representatives from the Publications and Education Department of the High Commission for Human Rights. The workshop was attended by Dr. Inas Dhia, Head of the Human Rights Unit at the Center, as well as a number of faculty members, staff, and postgraduate students.
The workshop comprised two main themes. The first, presented by Dr. Ahmed Thabet, discussed the Sustainable Development Agenda. The second, presented by Assistant Lecturer Abeer Kamel, addressed the cultural right to the city. Dr. Kamel emphasized the importance of achieving the goals and principles of sustainable development, which include propelling the city towards objectives that contribute to the organization and full realization of human rights within a harmonious city that embodies all the foundations and principles of social solidarity and integration.
Dhia stressed that the recommendations focused on applying the principles of sustainable development to modern cities in a way that guarantees the rights of all members of society. She also emphasized the need to raise community awareness through posters, seminars, workshops, and cultural events on this topic, and the importance of staying informed about the latest developments in the human rights library at the High Commission for Human Rights, as well as conducting regular field visits to the library.
