The Center of Urban and Regional Planning for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad hosted a scientific seminar entitled “The Role of Women in Promoting Environmental Awareness.” The seminar was organized by the Women’s Affairs Coordination Committee at the National Center for Population and Demographic Studies, in cooperation with the National Center for Cancer Research, and was attended by a number of faculty members and staff. The seminar aimed to clarify the role of women in promoting and raising environmental awareness within society through their participation in education and guidance, and to empower them to be the initiators of local initiatives in schools, residential neighborhoods, associations, and other venues. It also focused on promoting sustainable behaviors such as water and energy conservation, waste reduction, and recycling, as well as disseminating environmental knowledge about the effects of climate change and pollution on health and the economy.
The seminar addressed topics related to women as key players in environmental education within the family and school, along with sustainable daily practices for waste reduction, reuse, and resource conservation. It also covered the role of women in community initiatives such as clean-up and planting campaigns, and the environmental and health impacts on women and children. The most prominent recommendations that emerged from the symposium focused on the importance of including environmental culture within school activities led by female guides or trained teachers, along with organizing periodic community campaigns to rationalize water and energy consumption and reduce the use of plastic socially.
