Dr. Ammar Khalil, an assistant professor at the Center of Urban and Regional Planning for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad, participated in a workshop held by the preparatory committee for the Fifth International Conference on Geospatial Technologies for Smart Cities. The conference was organized by the National Center for Spatial Data Management, affiliated with the National Security Advisory, and was attended by a number of academics and other stakeholders. Dr. Khalil confirmed that the meeting addressed the finalization of the conference dates, which will be from February 7-9, 2026, and determined the venue for the opening ceremony, to be held at the Al-Rasheed Hotel. The meeting also discussed the workshops included in the conference program and the research papers to be presented. He noted that the committee chair directed the formation of a scientific team from the operations room to determine the workshop times and content, appoint a chairperson for each workshop, and finalize the recommendations for each workshop.
Khalil stated that the conference will include several workshops related to smart, safe, and sustainable cities; geospatial technologies for enhancing security and military capabilities; workshops on promoting investment opportunities in Iraq to build a sustainable economic future; urban problems and modern solutions for establishing a sustainable metropolis; and other workshops on the future transformations of artificial intelligence technologies and investing in population census data for sustainable development in Iraq; digital transformation in the Iraqi government program; future challenges for cybersecurity governance programs; and modern strategies for managing disasters, crises, and climate and environmental changes.

Several achievements of the National Center for Spatial Data Management were also presented, including a visit from the Chinese company Huawei and its expressed readiness to participate in and sponsor the Fifth International Conference, as well as communication with Russian companies and NATO, both of which expressed their willingness to participate in the conference.
