Urban planning Discusses Humanizing Cities and Social Participation
The Center of Urban and Regional Planning for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad discussed the master’s thesis titled “The Role of Humanizing Cities in Enhancing Community Participation” by student Nour Hassan Mahdi, supervised by Assistant Professor Dr. Ammar Khalil Ibrahim.
The thesis aimed to explore the concept of humanizing cities as a pivotal strategy for enhancing quality of life and addressing social challenges in urban environments.
The student relied on an integrated analytical methodology, including a comprehensive review of theoretical literature and field analysis based on questionnaires and direct interviews with residents. She also compared the experiences of the Bismayah Residential Complex with successful international models such as Copenhagen and Portland.
The thesis concluded that humanizing cities is not merely an urban design process, but rather a comprehensive tool for achieving social cohesion and spatial belonging. It recommended the importance of developing policies that promote integration between infrastructure and public transportation, expand social and cultural activities, and increase reliance on renewable energy.
