The Center of Urban and Regional Planning for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad held a workshop titled “The Effects of Smoking on Oral and Dental Health.” The workshop was delivered by Dr. Fadhli Saadoun, a dentist in the University Health Department, and attended by the center’s deanship and a group of faculty staff. The workshop aimed to raise awareness of the harmful effects of smoking and its psychological and social impact, sometimes leading to depression and other psychological and health symptoms.

Saadoun addressed the diseases that affect humans as a result of smoking, which begin with changes in the smell of the mouth and progress to infections of the pharynx and larynx, as well as heart disease, lung problems, liver damage, memory loss, and, in some cases, cancer of the throat, lungs, heart, and other organs.

The workshop covered steps for gradual smoking cessation, primarily relying on nicotine patches, nicotine gum, nicotine lozenges, or nicotine inhalers, along with nicotine nasal sprays. It also recommended medications that help calm the psychological and nervous system of smokers.

The workshop recommended regular oral and respiratory checkups, smoking cessation, and focusing on eating fruits and vegetables and exercising regularly for a healthy, disease-free body.
