The Dean of the Center for Urban and Regional Planning for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad, Prof. Dr. Karim Hassan Alwan, participated in the pre-emptive workshop for the Fifth International Conference on Geospatial Technologies and Smart Cities, entitled (Development of Spatial Information Systems and Smart Cities within the Academic and Research Process), which was organized by the Department of Construction and Projects at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the College of Science, and under the auspices of the National Security Advisory.
Alwan stressed that the workshop aimed to highlight the importance of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in supporting decision-making and enhancing the role of geospatial technology in developing work efficiency in order to develop the community population reality and adopt smart software in constructing buildings towards global standards. The workshop included several sessions and lectures attended by lecturers from all Iraqi universities, discussing the achievements of the Department of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems at the College of Science, highlighting the scientific role played by the mother university in achieving sustainable development and serving the local community, as the university is a pillar of the modern open state based on the openness of its institutions in employing technology to develop modern services and improve the quality of life.
It is noteworthy that the workshop called for achieving sustainable development, reducing carbon emissions and managing resources efficiently, in addition to reviewing the latest technologies such as the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence in improving city management and enhancing communication between citizens and services. The workshop recommended the need to support smart city projects in stages and implement flexible projects such as smart lighting systems and smart traffic management to measure the impact and improvement of urban infrastructure.
