The Dean of the Center for Urban and Regional Planning for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad, Prof. Dr. Karim Hassan Alwan, held a workshop entitled (Environmental Awareness and Its Impact on the Sustainability of Cities), which he delivered at the Higher Institute of Accounting and Financial Studies, in the presence of the Dean of the Institute, Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Al-Maamouri, and a group of professors and guests.
The workshop aimed to introduce the importance of environmental awareness and how to preserve the environment as a national duty, and to issue a measurement of sustainable development indicators and monitor the status of natural resources and rationalize their use in line with the goals of sustainable development. The workshop addressed environmental standards represented by noise levels and sewage, in addition to the emission of polluting gases and visual pollution.
Dr. Alwan also addressed in his workshop the sustainable city, which is classified according to its geographical location and administrative and economic function, in addition to the transportation network, commercial markets, and recreational or cultural centers that made the city more attractive to residents of villages and rural areas, which necessitates a return to the rules of sustainability to preserve it. The floor was opened for discussion with the attendees, and the supervisory role in environmental management was highlighted in light of building an environmental database to preserve humanity, especially after the United Nations revealed in its latest report that 70% of the world’s population will live in cities by the year 2050.
