The Continuing Education Unit at the Center of Urban and Regional Planning for Postgraduate Studies (University of Baghdad) organized a specialized academic course titled “Classification of Scientific Research Methodology” for 2025. The course was presented by Dr. Inas Diaa Hadi, Head of the Center’s Human Rights Unit, and Assistant Lecturer Ola Daoud, and was attended by the Center’s Dean, Prof. Dr. Karim Hassan Alwan, along with faculty, staff, and postgraduate students.
The course aimed to introduce the fundamentals of research methodology for formulating research proposals, as well as to explore various scientific research methods and their characteristics.
On the first day, the training course addressed the formulation of research proposals—including defining research problems and hypotheses—and discussed research gaps and their types. The second day focused on reviewing and analyzing prior studies, as well as examining research results and conclusions.
Over the two days, the course provided a detailed overview of scientific research method classifications based on prominent academic standards. Dr. Hadi offered an extensive explanation of key methods, including the descriptive method—widely used to analyze descriptive issues, particularly in social sciences—and the inductive method, commonly used in natural sciences, which proceeds from the specific to the general. Additionally, the course covered the analytical method, which relies on deconstructing a problem and meticulously examining its components to derive conclusions and formulate solutions. The course addressed the deductive method—a traditional approach that examines a phenomenon in its entirety before applying it to specific details—and went on to cover the historical and experimental methods, reviewing the steps, advantages, and limitations of each to guide researchers toward their optimal application.
The training course included a simple practical exercise on applying scientific research methodology and concluded with the distribution of certificates of completion on the second day.
