The Dean of the Center for Urban and Regional Planning for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad, Prof. Dr. Karim Hassan Alwan, chaired the committee to discuss a master’s thesis at the College of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Duhok, entitled (The Impact of the Transformation of the Transportation System on the Sustainable Built Environment of Duhok Governorate) for the student Aland Kamal Othman. Alwan confirmed that he discussed with the student the objectives of the research represented by the effects of transportation and its repercussions on the sustainability of the environment in the city of Duhok, especially with regard to encouraging public transportation and reducing private transportation, which has become an integral part of traffic congestion, in addition to the impact of vehicle exhaust on the environment.

The Dean stated that the thesis also addressed the topic of infrastructure and its impact on the environment in light of the calculations of green areas and spaces, in addition to planning land uses in a way that serves to create an ideal sustainable environment. It is noteworthy that the Center for Urban and Regional Planning for Graduate Studies has participated in many master’s and doctoral discussions in various Iraqi universities. This participation comes within the framework of the center’s openness to educational institutions to benefit from its academic expertise in terms of the cognitive weight and research capabilities that the center has been known for since its establishment in 1971.
