The Dean of the Center of Urban and Regional Planning for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad, Prof. Dr. Kareem Hassan Alwan, attended the scientific symposium entitled (Analysis of Scientific Research Indicators of the University of Baghdad according to the WOS Databases) presented by the Director of the Quality Assurance and University Performance Department at the University Presidency, Dr. Omar Faleh Hassan, in the College of Dentistry, in the presence of a group of deans of the university’s formations and officials of the quality assurance units.

Alwan confirmed that the symposium addressed the standards and indicators adopted by the Shanghai World Ranking in evaluating universities and specializations, as the Shanghai Ranking is one of the most relied upon academic classifications in the world and focuses on academic and research performance. The classification criteria include those who have won international awards such as the Nobel Prize and the percentage of references to research published in reputable international journals, in addition to the number of research published in the highest-ranked international journals.

It is worth noting that the symposium shed light on the analysis of strengths and weaknesses to evaluate the performance of the university’s formations in various specializations, and reviewed ways to improve and enhance scientific indicators to ensure entry into the classification.

The symposium recommended encouraging lecturers to increase scientific publishing in reputable journals in line with the number of university lecturers and the university’s historical position and status, and setting a clear policy to educate lecturers and graduate students about the correct citation mechanisms to enhance the university’s position in international rankings, and recommending the independence of the institution from an administrative and financial standpoint to reduce the burden on lecturers, allowing them to focus on scientific research and provide financial support for scientific publishing through the university’s fund allocated to support researchers and academic activities, in addition to forming multidisciplinary research teams to enhance the quality of research and advance the scientific level of the college and the university. This symposium emphasizes the importance of developing the academic and research performance of the parent university in a way that enhances its position in international rankings and reflects its long history and scientific contributions.
