The Urban and Regional Planning Center for Postgraduate Studies, under the patronage of the Dean of the Center, Prof. Dr. Karim Hassan Alwan, held a virtual training workshop on Google Meet platform,   tagged with sustainable planning methods to reduce environmental deterioration in cities and the preservation of natural resources. Three lectures where presented in the workshop, the first by Dr. Suad Jaber Lafta, the second by Dr. Falah Mahdi Al-Mousawi, and the third by Dr. Ma’rib Youssef Hamdan , a number of professors and students of the center attended the workshop.

The workshop dealt with the concept of environmental deterioration in cities, which is the result of the failure to deal with the natural wealth of society, such as the existing natural forests, which are not included in the economic and national accounts except by cutting down their trees to sell timber in the markets, while their environmental benefits are ignored.

Environmental deterioration leads to negative effects on economic activity, so we note that this activity itself is a cause of environmental deterioration. The workshop dealt with the integration of methods of environmental planning and urban planning, in addition to addressing the trends of modern environmental planning in the management of natural resources, where the orientation of environmental management to environmental governance is to reduce the deterioration in cities and preserve natural assets.

This virtual workshops comes within the center’s plan in support of the scientific process in time of Corona pandemic.
