The Dean of the Center of Urban and Regional Planning for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad participated in a master’s discussion held at the Technical College of Engineering at the Middle Technical University, on the thesis entitled (Soil Salinity Mapping Using Sentinel 1, Sentinel 2 and Advanced Machine Learning Algorithms – Diyala Governorate Study) by the student Elaf Abdul Sattar Abdullah.
Alwan confirmed that the thesis aimed to use Sentinel 1 and Sentinel 2 data to obtain the best estimate of electrical conductivity values from soil affected by salt in Diyala Governorate in 2024, and to be able to create accurate salinity maps to monitor soil salinity as an environmental issue in Diyala Governorate, after collecting 70 soil samples from January 19 to 26, 2024, supported by images.
The performance of three models was evaluated and compared using the root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and correlation coefficient (r).
The Center of Urban and Regional Planning seeks effective scientific participation outside the center, while the center works to communicate with various government institutions to establish joint cooperation mechanisms in which experiences are exchanged and cognitive skills are refined.
