The Center of Urban and Regional Planning for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad discussed the master’s thesis entitled (The Urban Project for Spontaneous Reconstruction and Achieving Social Sustainability) by the student Shahd Munir Abbas, and supervised by Professor Dr. Mustafa Abdul Jalil Ibrahim. The thesis aimed to understand and identify the factors that affect the formation of spontaneous construction areas and how to formalize them through the application of a sustainable urban project that enhances social life in urban communities.

In her thesis, the student discussed the possibility of integrating and adopting spontaneous construction areas as a positive case in cities by relying on the urban project strategy to reach adaptable planning towards socially sustainable development. The thesis concluded that spontaneous construction can complement official systems by providing housing for those who are not covered or included in official urban plans, and thus implementing the urban project that will formalize them with a framed government intervention through sustainable urban projects that aim to create flexible, socially sustainable, adaptable and easy-to-understand environments.
