The Center of Urban and Regional Planning for PostGraduate Studies hosted a master’s thesis discussion entitled “Urban Upgrading of Slums within the Boundaries of the Baghdad Municipality,” by student Saif Ahmed Abdullah, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Areej Khairy Othman.<\/span><\/h4>\n

The thesis aimed to identify planning approaches for informal housing in Baghdad following a study of Resolution 320 of 2022, clarify the criteria set by the Baghdad Municipality after identifying informal areas, and create a database for informal areas within the Baghdad Municipality and another database for the study area to design uses there.<\/span><\/h4>\n

In his thesis, the student demonstrated the worsening phenomenon of informal housing in most Iraqi cities, particularly within the Baghdad Municipality. The reason for the expansion and exacerbation of this phenomenon is the economic, political, and social conditions and the reluctance to hold violators accountable.<\/span><\/h4>\n

The thesis recommended the necessity of addressing the phenomenon of informal housing by decision-makers and not granting ownership to the beneficiaries of Resolution 320 of 2022 until at least 10 years have passed, in addition to limiting migration towards the city, especially towards informal housing areas, along with doubling government efforts to prevent encroachments on empty areas, open spaces and agricultural areas, and addressing the phenomenon of the presence of unused government lands within the boundaries of the master plan to avoid their exploitation or acquisition by some in a random and illegal manner.<\/span><\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
